     Sallie Hines was born in 1830 at North Carolina.² She charged Daniel Gurley in Bastardy Bond court When a woman fell pregnant with a child likely to be born illegitimate, she was legally obliged to notify her parish of settlement at least forty days prior to the expected birth, and submit to a Bastardy Examination (EP). In practice such examinations were frequently held after the birth, and were held before two Justices of the Peace. The examination was directed at forcing the mother to swear to the name of the father of the child. This in turn allowed the parish to seek an indemnity from the named father against any charges it might incur in supporting the child and mother. Fathers who could be identified in this way were obliged to enter into Bastardy Bonds to ensure that they paid regular support to the mother and child. If they failed to pay this support, they were legally obliged to pay the parish a substantial sum in compensation, often to the amount of £60 to £80.

The amounts involved were such that few men could indemnify the parish from their own resources, and friends and relatives, as sureties, were normally required to sign the bond as well. on 22 February 1864 at Wayne County, North Carolina.³ Sallie Hines married William Gurley, son of Lewis Gurley Jr. and Grace Wiggs, on 19 November 1868 at Wayne County, North Carolina; the Justice of the Peace was Hillery Hastings.^1,4,5 Sallie Hines was gave up her rights to be administrator of Wiley Gurley's estate and transfered the rights to W.A.      Eliza Gurley was born in 1881.³ She married Lewis Sasser on 17 December 1902 at Mrs. Polly Ann Gurley's home, Buck Swamp, Wayne County, North Carolina.⁴

     Lewis Ed Gurley was born on 1 September 1877 at North Carolina; listed as 26 when he was married.^1,3,2,4 He was recorded as voting he was listed as 25 years old on 11 October 1902 at Buck Swamp Township, Wayne County, North Carolina.⁵ He married Effie Pate on 4 January 1903 at J.D. Pate's home, Buck Swamp, Wayne County, North Carolina.^6,7,8 Lewis Ed Gurley died before 2 October 1963 at Goldsboro, North Carolina.⁹

     Effie Pate was born in 1885; listed as 18 when she was married.¹ She married Lewis Ed Gurley, son of William Gurley and Sallie Hines, on 4 January 1903 at J.D. Pate's home, Buck Swamp, Wayne County, North Carolina.^1,2,3

     Cicero Gurley was born on 20 March 1864.^2,3 He was adopted in 1868 at Wayne County, North Carolina; appears to have been informally adopted when William Gurley married Sallie Hines in 1868.⁴ He married Laney Dail on 4 February 1886 at Fork Township, Wayne County, North Carolina.^5,6,7,8 Cicero Gurley was involved in a land transfer with purchases and sales in the Wayne County area. Cicero Gurley Dies At Home In Fork
Cicero Gurley, 78, well-known Wayne County farmer, died Saturday afternoon at his home in Fork Township following a three-week illness of heart trouble.
Funeral service was conducted Sunday afternoon at Ebenezer Methodist Church by the Rev. Elijah Pierce of Princeton, Free Will Baptist minister. Interment was in the W. O. W. Cemetery at Princeton.

Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Lanie Dail; four sons, Leslie Gurley of Elm City, A. J. Gurley of Fork township and Al Gurley, assistant fire chief of Goldsboro, and Bob Gurley of Kenansville; five daughters, Mrs. W. J. Snypes of Princeton, Mrs. Sudie Munroe of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Raymond Howell of Durham, Mrs. West Brodgen and Mrs. George Roberts of Goldsboro; 24 grandchildren and four great grandchildren and one brother, Lewis Gurley of Pikeville. after 9 March 1940.¹²

     Charles Luther Gurley was born on 19 September 1871 at Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina.³ He married Hattie Massey on 14 October 1891 at Princeton, Wayne County, North Carolina.⁴ Charles Luther Gurley is head of household on the census of 1900 at Boon Hill, Johnston County, North Carolina. 1900 census of Johnston County, Boonhill Twp lists Charles L. Gurley age 28, born 1871 and listed as head of household and in the house listed with him are wife Hattie L, age 25 born 1874, dau Hattie M age 7, born 1893, dau Florence H. age 4, born 1892 and son Charels H age 1 born 1898. Enumerated with were Hattie Massey, Charles Harvey Gurley and Florence Hester Gurley.⁵ Charles Luther Gurley was recorded as voting on 24 October 1902 at Boon Hilll Township, Johnston County, North Carolina.⁶ Charles Luther Gurley is head of household on the census of 27 January 1920 at Boon Hill Lower Precinct, Johnston County, North Carolina, asCharlie Gurley. Charles was a 48 year old farmer, he was educated was living with his wife and children.. Enumerated with were Hattie Massey, William Calvin Gurley, John Leland Gurley, Raymond Gardner Gurley and Carl R. Gurley Sr.⁷ Charles Luther Gurley died on 13 July 1938 at Princeton, Johnston County, North Carolina, at age 66.⁸ He was buried on 14 July 1938 at Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Johnston County, North Carolina.^9,10

     Minnie Katura Gurley was born on 4 November 1873 at Nahunta, Wayne County, North Carolina.² She married Ivey Leroy "Bunn" Yelverton on 13 September 1891 at North Carolina.³ Minnie Katura Gurley died on 23 June 1933 at Fremont, Wayne County, North Carolina, at age 59.² She was buried after 23 June 1933 at Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont, Wayne County, North Carolina.²
