     William H. Gurley was born in 1833 at North Carolina.1 He began military service circa 17 April 1861 at North Carolina when he enlisted in company D, 4th regiment of the NC Troops.2,3,4 He began military service on 7 May 1861 at Wayne County, North Carolina, when he enlisted with Company D, 4th Regiment of the N.C. State Troops. This company was known as the Goldsboro Volunteers and was started in Goldsboro April 15, 1861. Each soldier originally enlisted for 12 months of service and was assigned to the 9th Regiment N.C. Volunteers.5 He was involved in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where he was wounded in the left leg and captured between 1 July 1863 and 4 July 1863.6 He was hospitalized at Gettysburg until he could be transferred to a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland on 6 October 1863.6 He was released from the hospital and transferred to City Point, Virginia on 12 November 1863 he was exchanged for a union prisoneer sometime aroung November 17, 1863.6 He was involved in the Battle of Geyyisburg where he was wounded in the left leg by a musket ball. on 3 July 1864 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.7 He ended military service on 15 February 1865 because of the wounds received at Gettysburg.6
