     Rufus W. Gurley was born in 1840.3 As of after 1840, Rufus W. Gurley was also known as Rufus Gurley.4 As of after 1840, Rufus W. Gurley also went by the name of Frank.5 He was born in 1842 at North Carolina.6,7,8 He was born in 1844 at Wayne County, North Carolina.5,9 He was enumerated with William Gurley on the census of 8 August 1850 at the North Side of the Nuse River, Wayne County, North Carolina.10 Rufus W. Gurley began military service on 27 May 1861 at Wayne County, North Carolina, when he joined Company H, 2nd Regiment of the N.C. State Troops. Company H. was organized in Wayne County on May 27, 1861 and was ordered to Cano Advance near Garysburg, Northampton County, North Carolina.3 He was captured at Sharpsburg, Maryland on 17 September 1862 and placed in confinment at Fort Delaware, Delaware.11 He was paroled and exchanged for a Union prisoner on 2 October 1862 at Aiken's Landing, Virginia, According to Civil War documents, he was declared exchanged on November 10, 1862.11 He was promoted to Corporal on 1 December 1862 Evidently he was captured again because war records indicate that he was again paroled on May 4, 1863.11 He was promoted to Sergeant sometime in between November 1863 and December 1863.11 He was involved in a battle at the Spotsylvania Virginia County Court House and again was captured between 19 May 1864 and 20 May 1864 He was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland and transferred to Elmira, New York on July 6, 1864.11 He ended military service on 30 June 1865 at Elmira, New York, when he was released after having taking an Oath of Allegiance to the Union.11 He and Celia Gurley appeared on the census of 1900 at Fork Township, Wayne County, North Carolina.12 Rufus W. Gurley was recorded on the voters registration he listed ancester as Wileyand age as 52. in 1902 at Wayne County, North Carolina.12 He died in 1925; was unmarried.4 He died on 18 January 1926 at Wayne County, North Carolina.2
