West Gurley1

West Gurley was born circa 1761. As of after 1761, West Gurley was also known as John West Gurley. He wasgranted land containing 100 acres bordering the Rocky River on 11 October 1783 at Montgomery County, North Carolina.2 He was involved in a land transfer selling 216 acres of land to Jesse Hall on 12 November 1818 at Oconee County, South Carolina.3 He was involved in a land transfer between 1819 and 1820 at Jefferson County, Alabama.4 He was issued a U.S. land patent when he bought 80 acres on 15 June 1826 at Blount County, Alabama.5 He and Aaron Gurley were involved in a land transaction when West transfered land to Aaron on 10 February 1838 at Jefferson County, Alabama.6 West Gurley married Mary Pool on 3 September 1840 at Blount County, Alabama.7,8 West Gurley William Pryor said, " Of certainty, West Gurley was a rugged person. He was one of the many enterprising people who moved several times dueing the 1700's and 1800's and established settlements on the frontiers of texpanding U.S.A. Thus, he never had the opportunity to learn to read and write, and thereby lived a long and venturesome life by his faith, his wits, and the sweat of his brow -- where doctors, medical care, and modern travel, farming, and living conveniences were unknown."9 He and Nathaniel West Gurley were involved in a land transfer when he transfered land to his son, Nathaniel W. Gurley for "love and affestion." West Gurley reserved for himself and his wife, Mary, the occupency, rents, title and claim during their natural life. on 25 June 1850 at Jefferson County, Alabama.10 West Gurley died before 14 June 1853 at Jefferson County, Alabama.11
