     Jeremiah G. Gurley was born on 5 January 1826 at Anderson District, Oconee County, South Carolina.1 He married Mary Anne Stokes, daughter of David Stokes, on 25 December 1845 at Pickens County, Alabama.2 Jeremiah G. Gurley wasthe minister for the Methodist Church. He was a curcuit minister who travelled all over Alabama preaching and handling churches in many different areas of the state. In the Tuscaloosa Independent Monitor newspaper a marriage ceremony was noted performed by Rev. J.G. Gurley. between 1849 and 1882 at Alabama.3,4 He was issued a U.S. land patent when he bought 40 acres on 1 April 1850 at Pickens County, Alabama.5 He was issued a U.S. land patent when he bought 80 acres on 1 June 1858 at Pickens County, Alabama.6 He died in 1888 at Birmingham, Alabama; from cancer of the stomach.7

Nicholas Gurley

     Was owed 6 Shillings from Jacob Vasser's estate.1 Nicholas Gurley was born before 1709; this date is estimated, he was of legal age to witness deeds and other transactions in 1730. From 1730 until the time of his death, Nicholas was involved either as a witness or as a principle in several land transactions in Isle of Wight Co., VA and what became Southampton Co., VA. Nicholas Gurley was a witness to a deed from John Braswell and wife, Alice Braswell to James Turner...100 acres adjoining Doctors Branch and Joseph West. Other wittnesses were Oliver Woodward and Richard Woodward on 20 April 1730 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia.2 He was a witness of a deed transfering land between John and Allice Braswell to Roger Woodward. This transaction included 245 acres adjoining Doctors Branch on 18 July 1730 at Isle of Wight, Virginia.3 He was a witness of a deed from John Braswell to William Wood consiting of 195 acres on the south side of Nottoway River on 14 July 1732 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia.4 He wasgranted land by King George II consisting of 150 acres on the south side of the Nottaway River. This land was later sold by his son Nicholas and his wife Anne on September 9, 1773. on 28 February 1733 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia.5 He married Ann (?) before 1736; proven by the will of Nicholas Gurley when he says, "Lastly my Will and desire is that the remainder of my Estate ...be and remain in my Wife Ann's hands during her life ... for the support of herself and children" Date of marriage estimated by age of son, Benjamin.6 Nicholas Gurley witnessed the land transfer of George Gurley Senior on 7 July 1740 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia; from James Carter and wife Priscilla of Bartee County, North Carolina to George Gurley for 3 pounds. This was a lease and release transaction for 175 acres that adjoined William Sellers in.7 Nicholas Gurley was a witness of a deed from Richard Vick and his wife Sarah to John Bryant on 18 March 1742 at Isle of Wight, Virginia.8 He and John Gurley were involved in a land transfer when John and his wife, Kezia sold 50 acres on the North side of Dicks Swamp in Nottoway Parish to Nicholas Gurley for £70. on 23 August 1745 at Nottoway Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia.9,10,11 Nicholas Gurley was appointed executor of the estate of William Rochester the will was recorded on 13 April 1749 at Isle of Wight, Virginia.12,13 He was described as land owner with property adjacent to Richard Vick, when Vick patented 335 acres on 12 July 1750 at S. Side of Nottoway River down the Wolf Pit Branch, Isle of Wight County, Virginia.14 He served served on a Grand Jury, interesting to note Mary Gurle, juniory was an informant to one of the cases they decided on on 8 November 1750 at Southampton County, Virginia.15 He and John Gurley served served on the County jury with on 9 November 1750 at Southampton County, Virginia.16 Nicholas Gurley served Named as a Jury member. But, also petitioned the court as administrator of the William Rochester estate on 13 December 1750 at Southampton County, Virginia.17 He served on 13 December 1750 at Southampton County, Virginia.18 He and George Gurley Junior served on 12 April 1751 at Southampton County, Virginia.19 Nicholas Gurley served was named as a juror on 12 April 1751 at Southampton, Virginia.20 He served appointed by the Court to serve as surveyor of the highway in the room of Joseph Newsoom who is discharged. on 14 August 1754.21 On on 12 August 1756 at Southampton County, Virginia, Nicholas Gurley was a listed on the estate of William Hatfield with some money being due to him.22 He left a will that was executed on 23 April 1761 at Nottoway Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, it was witnessed by a Mary Gurley Jun. who was probably the wife of George Gurley, Jr., George Gurley Sen., and Thomas Edwards. The executors were George Gurley Jr., who was listed in the will as a friend (which did not mean at this time, not related) and Jos. Cobb.23,24 He died between 23 April 1761 and 11 March 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia; his will was signed and witnessed on April 23, 1761 and recorded on March 11, 1762.25,26 The estate of Nicholas Gurley was inventoried on 11 March 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia, it was valued at £33.7.2 d. The estate was appraised by John Drake, Nathan Vasser, and Thomas Edwards. The proceeds and accounting was given to his widow on July 30, 1763.27,28 His estate was probated on 8 April 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia; the following children were left: William, Nicholas, Lydia and Mourning; George Gurley Jr was named guardian and he posted a bond in the value of £500.29 He estate was inventoried on 8 September 1763 at Southampton County, Virginia, and presented to the county court by Nicholas Gurley Jr.30

     Ann (?) was born circa 1716. She married Nicholas Gurley before 1736; proven by the will of Nicholas Gurley when he says, "Lastly my Will and desire is that the remainder of my Estate ...be and remain in my Wife Ann's hands during her life ... for the support of herself and children" Date of marriage estimated by age of son, Benjamin.3 In Nicholas Gurley's will dated 23 April 1761 at Nottoway Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, Ann (?) was named as an heir; it was witnessed by a Mary Gurley Jun. who was probably the wife of George Gurley, Jr., George Gurley Sen., and Thomas Edwards. The executors were George Gurley Jr., who was listed in the will as a friend (which did not mean at this time, not related) and Jos. Cobb.4,5 She was provided an accounting of the estate of Nicholas Gurley on 11 March 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia; it was valued at £33.7.2 d. The estate was appraised by John Drake, Nathan Vasser, and Thomas Edwards. The proceeds and accounting was given to his widow on July 30, 1763.6,7 Ann (?) was listed as a beneficiary of the estate inv of Benjamin Gurley with 3 Shillings paid on 13 May 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia.8 Ann (?) was appears to have gotten some money from the estate of Thomas Jarrell on 13 August 1767 at Southampton County, Virginia.9 She was a witness of a deed was possibly the Ann Gurley listed as witness to the deed between John Howard and Robert Cheek on 14 May 1768 at Warren County, North Carolina.10 She moved to at Halifax County, North Carolina, before 14 February 1772 along them were her sons, William and Nicholas and his wife, Ann. moved to Halifax County, North Carolina after her husband Nicholas and her son Benjamin died.11 She and William Gurley were involved in a land transfer when they sold 154 Acres in Southampton County to Edward Spencer. The property was the land that Nicholas received in his patent of 154 Acres on July 14, 1769, with the same description. This land was given by Nicholas to his son Nicholas somehow, William and his mother had it at this time, both were living in Halifax County, North Carolina. on 14 February 1772 at Southampton County, Virginia.12 Ann (?) died after 1772. She and Nicholas Gurley were involved in a land transfer with Lydia (Gurley) Vasser on 9 September 1773 at Southampton County, Virginia.13

     Benjamin Gurley was born before 1737; based on he being the 1st beneficiary listed in his father's will and he was of legal age in 1758 to witness legal documents. In addition, the other children of Nicholas were underage at the time of his death.4 He married Elizabeth (?) circa 1755; the marriage is proven by a reference in the Southampton County Will Book to Benjamin Gurley's wife Elizabeth.5 Benjamin Gurley was a witness of a deed with Joseph and Mary J. Cobb on 8 July 1758 at Southampton County, Virginia.6 In Nicholas Gurley's will dated 23 April 1761 at Nottoway Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, Benjamin Gurley was named as an heir; it was witnessed by a Mary Gurley Jun. who was probably the wife of George Gurley, Jr., George Gurley Sen., and Thomas Edwards. The executors were George Gurley Jr., who was listed in the will as a friend (which did not mean at this time, not related) and Jos. Cobb.7,8 On 23 April 1761 at Southampton County, Virginia, he was a benficiary in the will of his father Nicholas Gurley.9 He estate and his father's estate were appraised and recorded at about the same time. On page 467 of Southampton County Will Book 1, Benjamin Gurley estate inventory was ordered to be recorded. After that his fathers estate was recorded. in 1762.10 He left a will that was executed before 11 March 1762 it contained bequests to his mother and his brother William. Excutors were brothers Thomas and John. Witnesses were George Gurley Jr., Mary Gurley, and Mary Peden.11 He died before 11 March 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia.10,12,13 He estate was inventoried on 11 March 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia, by order of the court. The inventory and appraisal was made on March 11, 1762 and was returned and recorded May 13, 1762. His wife Elizabeth was the administratrix. Appraisers were John Drake, Nathan Vasser and Thomas (T) Edwards. Total value of the first inventory subtracting debts: £31.12.71/2. Allowed Elizabeth Gurley for taking care of the estate £2. Sales by Micajah Edwards and Joseph Cobb totaled £35.6.3-3/4. 3/4 gal. brandy for funeral cost 3/9d while coffi only cost 2/6d. 1 gal of brandy for appraisement 5/0d. 7 qts. of brandy for first sale 8/9d. 1/2 gal. brandy second sale, 2/6d.14,15 He estate was inventoried on 13 May 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia.16

     Nicholas Gurley was born after 1741; based on the children of Nicholas being given to the care of George Gurley Jr. in 1762, after the death of Nicholas.4 In Nicholas Gurley's will dated 23 April 1761 at Nottoway Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, Nicholas Gurley was named as an heir; it was witnessed by a Mary Gurley Jun. who was probably the wife of George Gurley, Jr., George Gurley Sen., and Thomas Edwards. The executors were George Gurley Jr., who was listed in the will as a friend (which did not mean at this time, not related) and Jos. Cobb.5,6 He was granted guardianship of George Gurley Junior after the death of his father, Nicholas; a bond was posted on 8 April 1762 at Southampton County, Virginia.7 Nicholas Gurley was taken care of by George Gurley Junior this account notes father, Nicholas Gurley and the balance due to Nicholas. Also noted is his guardian, George Gurley, Junior in September 1763 at Southampton County, Virginia.8 Nicholas Gurley witnessed the estate inv of Nicholas Gurley on 8 September 1763 at Southampton County, Virginia; and presented to the county court by Nicholas Gurley Jr.9 Nicholas Gurley was a witness when William Gurley and George Gurley Junior were an inventory took place of the property inherited by William, Nicholas, Lydia, and Mourning from the estate of their father Nicholas, it included a bible, a testament, rent on the plantation for 5 years and a balance due, all acknowledged by George Gurley, Junior Guardian in August 1768 at Southampton County, Virginia.10 Nicholas Gurley wasgranted land containing 154 Acres on 14 July 1769 at Southside of the Nottoway River, Southampton County, Virginia.11 He and George Gurley Junior were an accounting from the estate of Nicholas Gurley was presented in Court on behalf of orphans: Nicholas, Mourning, Lydia, and William. Overseen by George Gurley, Juniot. Guardian. on 13 September 1770 at Southampton County, Virginia.12 Nicholas Gurley was (an unknown value) on 8 August 1771 at Southampton County, Virginia.13 He moved with his mother, Ann (?) before 14 February 1772 at Halifax County, North Carolina; along them were her sons, William and Nicholas and his wife, Ann. moved to Halifax County, North Carolina after her husband Nicholas and her son Benjamin died.14 Nicholas Gurley and Ann (?) were involved in a land transfer with Lydia (Gurley) Vasser on 9 September 1773 at Southampton County, Virginia.15 Nicholas Gurley was involved in a land transfer when he and his wife Anne sold to Lyddia Vasser of Southampton County 100 Acres this was probably the land that his father, Nicholas was granted in 1733. Both Nicholas and his wife, Anne appeared in court in the county on 9 September 1773 at Southampton County, Virginia.16 He was listed and accounted for in a War ledgers for his guard service to the Halifax, NC Regiment of Milita Guards. He served under Capt. Branch and John Bradford Colo between March 1776 and April 1776.17 He waswitness in a land transfer betwen Richard Stevens and Isaac Aaron on 7 October 1780 at Halifax County, North Carolina.18

The property was the land that Nicholas received in his patent of 154 Acres on July 14, 1769, with the same description. This land was given by Nicholas to his son Nicholas somehow, William and his mother had it at this time, both were living in Halifax County, North Carolina. on 14 February 1772 at Southampton County, Virginia.13 William Gurley wasa witness to a land transfer between Benjamin Coats and Mark Browning on 1 February 1780 at Halifax County, North Carolina.14

     Lucy Martin was appointed executor.4 She was born after 1766.5 She and George Gurley Jr. were issued a marriage bond on 11 May 1786 at Southampton County, Virginia.6,7 Lucy Martin married George Gurley Jr., son of George Gurley Junior and Mary Willis, on 18 May 1786 at Southamption County, Virginia; Geroge's father, Parsons George Gurley, rector of St. Lukes parish officiated the marriage ceremony.8,9,10 Lucy Martin witnessed the will of James Martin on 18 October 1791 at Southampton County, Virginia.4 Lucy Martin waslisted on the in 1831 tax list of at St. Luke's Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, his household's taxable property included three horses and one jig.11 She was involved in the 1831 Southampton Insurrection led by Nat Turner. She stood guard on her front poarch and declared, "I'll be dad if I am afraid of any negro who may come to my house." They did not come but, her servants were not as brave and fled to the corn-field. circa 22 August 1831 at Southampton County, Virginia.12 She was a witness was riding in a cart with her children and were being followed by Nat Turner's band of insurgants. with Patsy Gurley circa 22 August 1831 at Southampton County, Virginia.13 Lucy Martin waslisted on the in 1833 tax list of at St. Luke's Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, his household's taxable property included three horses and one jig, note, the taxables were the same since 1831.11 She waslisted on the between 1834 and 1835 tax list of at St. Luke's Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, his household's taxable property included one horse.14 She waslisted on the in 1836 tax list of at St. Luke's Parish, Southampton County, Virginia, his household's taxable property included one free negro.14 She died after 1836; according to the 1828 tax list. 96 acres were given to George Gurley's wife, Lucy in a life estate.     In the name of God, Amen, I, James Martin, of the County of Southampton and State of Virginia, being sick and weak of body, but of sound and disposing mind and memory, thanks to Almighty God for the same, do make and constitute this, my last will and testament in form and manner.
    I leave my Sorrell horse and colt and one steer to be sold and the money to be applied to the payments of my debts and if any balance remains to be left in the hands of my wife Amy to be applied to her own use.
    As to the remainder of my estate real and personal, I lend the use thereof to my loving wife, Amey William was the son of James and Emily Martin bequeath the same to be equally divided between my son, Kinchen Martin and daughter, Lucy Gurley and their heirs forever.
    Lastly I do appoint my loving wife ,Amey and my son-in-law, George Gurley, Executrix and Executor of this my last will and testament ratifying this and no other to be my last will and testament.

Gurley did not source his date, this looks pretty close due to the fact that Henry Gurley was married in 1775 making him 21 at the time of marriage.2,3 He was possibly present at a sale of the estate of Benjamin Harrell on 29 August 1775 at Bertie County, North Carolina.4
