John Gurley

M, b. before 1706, d. before July 1760
John Gurley was born before 1706 this date is purely speculative based on a John Gurley witnessing a will in 1727 and at that point being of legal age.1 Byron Gibson, Gurley researcher speculated John Gurley was that John had a father James. Had brothers Joseph who married a Susan Wise and a brother Benjamin who married a Betsey who lived 1719-63 in Marblehead Mass. He also speculated that John was born in Inverness Scotland in 1715. He was a witness to the will of John Gent. This was the first record of a Gurley in the Virginia records. on 3 December 1727 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia.1 He was likely issued a Virginia land patent on 28 February 1733 at adjoining Beaver Dam Swamp, Nottoway Parish, Virginia.2 He married Keziah Turner circa 1736 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia; Marriage is proved by the mention of Keziah as John Gurley's wife in his will proved in July 1760. Date is proved by ages of children and also proved by mention of John Gurley and wife Keziah Gurley in Isle of Wight deed dated August 23, 1743 and John witnessing a deed from Keziah Turner on May 3, 1743.3,4,5 In 1966, researcher George Hartness speculated that John Gurley and Keziah Turner were was the 2nd wife of John Gurley and not the mother of Arthur due to the fact that in Arthur's will, he made mention of his "Mother-In-Law" Keziah.6 John Gurley witnessed the land transfer of George Gurley Senior on 7 July 1740 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia; from James Carter and wife Priscilla of Bartee County, North Carolina to George Gurley for 3 pounds. This was a lease and release transaction for 175 acres that adjoined William Sellers in.7 John Gurley was a witness of a deed transferred from Kezzia Turner to Joseph Cobb.. it was the plantation given her by her father, James Turner, decd. on 3 May 1743 at Nottoway Parish, Isle of Wight, Virginia.8 He was a witness of a deed from Willaim Sellers and his wife Providence to William Hatfield of 100 acres, evidently this land is part of a patent that was granted to John Gurley on Feb. 28, 1733. There is no record of this patent on 19 May 1743 at Nottoway Parish, Isle of Wight, Virginia.2 He was involved in a land transfer from Joseph Rochester of Bartee Precinct in North Carolina to John Gurley of Isle of Wight County, VA 50 acres on the southside of the Nottoway River, this transaction is witnessed by George Gurley on 15 August 1743 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia.9,10 He and Nicholas Gurley were involved in a land transfer when John and his wife, Kezia sold 50 acres on the North side of Dicks Swamp in Nottoway Parish to Nicholas Gurley for £70. on 23 August 1745 at Nottoway Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia.11,12,13 John Gurley was land owner with property adjacent to Richard Vick, when Vick patented 335 acres on 12 July 1750 at Sourth Side of Nottoway River, down the Wolf Pit Branch, Isle of Wight, Virginia.14 He and Nicholas Gurley served served on the County jury with on 9 November 1750 at Southampton County, Virginia.15 John Gurley served on 13 December 1750 at Southampton County, Virginia.16 He moved to at Johnston County, North Carolina, in before 1751. He registered a land entry with county officals for purchased land from William Gurley circa 1751 at Dobbs County, North Carolia.17 He was involved in a land transfer John Gurly sold land to John Ballard p.469 circa 1754 at Dobbs County, North Carolina.18 He left a will executed on 21 December 1759 at Johnston County, North Carolina, this was the first Gurley Will recorded and probated in Johnston County, North Carolina

Keziah Turner

F, b. circa 1715
Keziah Turner was born circa 1715. She married John Gurley circa 1736 at Isle of Wight County, Virginia; Marriage is proved by the mention of Keziah as John Gurley's wife in his will proved in July 1760. Date is proved by ages of children and also proved by mention of John Gurley and wife Keziah Gurley in Isle of Wight deed dated August 23, 1743 and John witnessing a deed from Keziah Turner on May 3, 1743.1,2,3 In 1966, researcher George Hartness speculated that Keziah Turner and John Gurley were was the 2nd wife of John Gurley and not the mother of Arthur due to the fact that in Arthur's will, he made mention of his "Mother-In-Law" Keziah.4 Keziah Turner witnessed the land transfer of John Gurley and Nicholas Gurley on 23 August 1745 at Nottoway Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia; when John and his wife, Kezia sold 50 acres on the North side of Dicks Swamp in Nottoway Parish to Nicholas Gurley for £70.5,6,7 Keziah Turner was mentioned in the will of John Gurley as his wife on 21 December 1759 at Johnston County, North Carolina; this was the first Gurley Will recorded and probated in Johnston County, North Carolina

In the same item it is noted that Nathan GURLEY recorded a livestock mark for identification of his property.

"Ordered that Nathan GURLEY's Mark be recorded which is a crop in each ear and a half moon under the left."

Later in 1761Nathan GURLEY witnessed the will of John Torn. (80.)

Towards the end of 1761, Nathan delivered into court a second inventory of the estate of his father, John
GURLEY that included some items that were not available during the first inventory. (81)

In early 1762, Nathan delivered am account of the estate of his father, John GURLEY which was allowed. (JCCM v.1, 120)

About 1763, Nathan Gurley proved a deed from William GURLEY (It is unclear which William this was) to Alex. Pool which was recorded. Later the same day, the accounting of money from the sale of the estate of his father, John GURLEY was exhibited by Nathan and recorded by the court. (JCCM v.1, 172)

In 1763, A deed from John Ballard to Nathan Gurley was proved by the oath of Richard Vinson. (JCCM v.1 p.96)

In 1764, a deed from Nathan GURLEY to Stephan Anter was proved in court by John Smith. (JCCM v.1, 245)

In 1765, it appears that the estate of John Gurley, Nathan's father was finalized when Nathan resubmitted an accounting to the court. (JCCM v.1, 256.)

He was born before 1740; based on being able to sign legal documents in 1761.3 He and Joseph Gurley were involved in a land transfer Joseph Gurley sold land to Nathan Gurley circa 1757 at Dobbs County, North Carolina.4 Nathan Gurley was mentioned as son in the will of John Gurley on 21 December 1759 at Johnston County, North Carolina; this was the first Gurley Will recorded and probated in Johnston County, North Carolina
